Italtel has been involved for years in industrial research projects at European level to feed into its own industrial innovation process and with the primary objective to explore and experiment new technologies and solutions that can be quickly adopted in products under development, according to the indications from the customers and from the market.
The commitment of Italtel in research initiatives has been going on for over 20 years, both in the research initiatives of the European Union, both in bottom-up initiatives such as Eureka, in the areas of software, telecommunications and Information Technology. As for the Eureka program, Italtel is a founding member of one of the main development consortia in the ICT sectors: CELTIC (Co-operation for sustained European Leadership in Telecommunications) and its evolution CELTIC-Plus.
Italtel participates in several European Union programmes in the ICT framework, which aim to improve the competitiveness of European industry to leverage the development of new technologies and applications.
Under the 7th Framework Program, Italtel is carrying out the following Integrating Projects (IPs):
Mobile Cloud Networking - MCN, to develop a novel mobile network architecture and technologies, to pave the way from current mobile networks to a fully cloud-based mobile communication system, for the period 2012-2015 (http://www.mobile-cloud-networking.eu).
T-NOVA - Network Functions as-a-Service over Virtualised Infrastructures, to design an automated solution for provisioning, monitoring and managing VNFs by introducing a novel management framework, for the period 2014-2016 (http://www.t-nova.eu).
Within the recently opened Horizon 2020 framework, Italtel is participating in the SESAME (Small cEllS coordinAtion for Multi-tenancy and Edge services) project that, over the period 2015-2017, will target innovations in 5G networks around three central elements: Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Edge Cloud Computing; evolution of the concepts of Small Cell and multi-tenancy in communications infrastructures (http://www.sesame-h2020-5g-ppp.eu/).
